Plant tissue culture is a process of cloning and micropropagation of plant tissue of the selected plants. It is a modern technology that is applied for mass production for most of crops, including banana plant. This method can ensure that the tissue cultured plants possess higher yield and quality as well as they are free from disease.
Banana crop is usually propagated by traditional method, such as the use of banana sucker. However, plant tissue culture technique is nowadays applied in banana plant propagation. In the clonal process, the first stage is mother plant selection which is the most important part of tissue culture. The disease free area, quality, yield of the desired mother plant are recorded and identified. Hence, only the suckers from the mother plants with best conditions will be chosen and used. The selected suckers will be processed in the next five major steps, such as Initiation, Multiplication, Shooting & rooting, Primary hardening, and Secondary hardening.
